Turkey is advancing at a rapid pace in the adoption of electric vehicle technology and the development of its charging infrastructure. With the latest data, the number of AC/DC charging stations and total electric cars in Turkey has also emerged. Here are the details…
How many AC and DC electric car charging stations are there in Turkey?
As a result of the EMRA studies in 2023, the legal infrastructure for charging service activities was created and the number of charging network operator license holders reached 132. The number of electric vehicle charging stations in Turkey rose to 3,790. In addition, the number of charging sockets increased to 8 thousand 1. In other words, in a scenario where all of them work, more than 8 thousand vehicles can be charged at the same time.

According to the data until July 2023, which emerged after the final installations were completed, Turkey ranks 2nd in the EU in terms of AC charging points, 3rd in terms of DC charging points, and 2nd in terms of total charging points.
In addition, according to Turkish Statistical Institute data, the number of electric vehicles, which was 14 thousand 552 at the end of last year, increased by 88.8 percent in the first 6 months of the year and reached 27 thousand 476 (exceeded 35 thousand by the end of August). Therefore, when a rough calculation is made, there is approximately 1 socket for every 3.5 electric vehicles in Turkey.
This rate is 1 socket for 13 vehicles on average across EU countries. Of course, it should be noted that in no country, including Turkey, the usage directly plugged into the sockets in the houses is not calculated. Similarly, the stations you use depending on the meter in your home in the open/closed car parks on the sites are not counted.
In the distribution of electric vehicle charging stations by province, Istanbul stands out with its 2,200 charging points. After Istanbul, Ankara has 822, Antalya 682, Izmir 402, Bursa 357, Muğla 314, Kayseri 254, Konya 247, Eskişehir 178 and Afyonkarahisar 140.
While the existing charging points in Turkey are seen to be clustered in areas where the population is concentrated, especially in Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya and Izmir, public charging points serve electric vehicle owners in all 81 provinces of Turkey. However, let us state that there are only one or two stations in provinces such as Ardahan (2), Kars (2), Ağrı (2), Tunceli (1) and Muş (1).
Information such as geographical locations of public charging stations, number of charging units and sockets, types and powers, payment methods, availability and charging service prices are made available to electric vehicle users through the Şarj@TR application developed by EMRA.
